Reflections on the second training session in Brno, Czech Republic

The second training session of the Erasmus+ Program (KA2) cooperative partnership project “Natural paints for sustainable arts and crafts” (Plant & Paint) was a success, and was held in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. This event, held at the Secondary School of Art and Design and Higher Vocational School Brno “SSaVOS Brno”, brought together participants from all partner countries – Greece, Italy, Portugal, Latvia, Finland -, us, from Mendizabala, and our host, Czech Republic, to explore the topic «Blueprint and ecological printing”.

Arrival and opening day: 2 teachers and 2 students from each country arrived in the evening of February 16th and stayed at the “Hotel Cosmopolitan” in the city of Brno. All groups from different countries stayed in the same hotel.

The official program began on February 17 with a welcome to the school by the “SSaVOS Brno” team at the Francouszka facility. Afterwards, the participants visited the complete facility which allowed them to get to know the school’s departments: fashion design, space design, game design, interior design, graphic design, illustration, photography and illustration. The day continued with a presentation session by each of the participating countries, in which each team presented its region, city and school. In the afternoon, the participants were divided into two groups to carry out two activities: a visit to the SSaVOS Brno facilities in Husova and a first training session aimed at learning about the Risography printing technique.

Visiting Brno and surroundings: On February 18, the host school organized an excursion to visit two places related to the culture and traditions of the Moravian region in which the city of Brno is located. During the morning, we visited an old printing factory in the town of Strážnice. During the visit participants were able to learn about traditional blueprint and indigo dyeing techniques. In the afternoon, the bus took us to the old water tanks  of the city of Brno, also known as Žlutý kopec. These spectacular underground tanks were built between 1874 and 1917 and served to supply water to the entire city until the end of the 20th century.

Hands on learning: On February 19 and 20, practical sessions on ecological printing and blueprint techniques using textiles of natural origin, such as cotton, and vegetable origin pigments such as curcuma or indigo, took place.

The first day two different techniques were practiced. In the first of them, cloth bags were engraved with the “Plant & Paint” project logo using the screen printing technique. In the second session, the printing techniques observed the previous day during the visit to the Strážnice factory were applied to make tablecloths designed by the participants themselves. After the printing process, the tablecloths were dried and transferred to the Stranice factory to be dyed with indigo, dried and washed. Once the process is completed, each tablecloth will be sent to the corresponding institute.

On the second day, Batik and Shibori techniques were worked on for dyeing and printing textiles. Participants created three scarves using different folding, string tying and stitching techniques. Once the clothes were prepared, they were immersed in a hot solution of water and curcuma in order to dye them. As on the previous day, the participants obtained all the designs they made as souvenirs.

Final presentations and closing: The last day, February 21, was dedicated to sharing the knowledge and experiences acquired throughout the week. The different groups prepared presentations that included the activities carried out as well as images of the experiences lived throughout the week. These presentations also served as a moment of gratitude to the SSaVOS team for their great effort in organizing the training session. Once the presentations were concluded, diplomas were given to the participants together with the bags and tablecloths created during the practical sessions. The training course concluded with a family photo of all participants.

In short, the second training session in Brno served to deepen the techniques of printing and dyeing sustainable textiles, as well as to take another step in the collaboration of the different centers involved. Looking ahead to the next mobility of the “Plant & Paint” project, our colleagues from the school 1 Epal N. Ionias Magnisias de Greece are already working on some sessions which will keep on strengthening our collaboration and increasing our knowledge about the extraction and use of natural origin pigments.
